The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program is a federal program set in place to provide assistance to those with disabilities. SSDI pays benefits to a person and their family if the individual previously worked at a job that paid into Social Security taxes.

The Social Security Administration generally defines disability as the inability to perform or engage in daily activities due to any medical, physical, or mental impairment. This impairment must last or at least be expected to last longer than 12 months to qualify.

The Social Security Administration treats mental disability as it does physical disability and will cover conditions such as schizophrenia, manic depressive disorder, ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, and more. How do I file a SSDI claim for mental health issues?

You are eligible to apply for SSDI the moment a mental health diagnosis is obtained.The Social Security Administration requires:

• Social Security number
• Birth certificate
• Names, addresses, phone numbers of doctors and clinicians that have cared for you
• Dates of visits to doctors and clinicians
• Names and dosages of medications
• Medical records that are already in your possession
• Lab and test results
• Summary of where you were employed and what kind of work you did
• Copy of the most recent W-2 form that was filed

To begin filing a claim, take these steps:

• With your mental healthcare provider, prove that you meet the criteria to qualify for benefits under a specific condition or group of conditions.
• Show that you are undergoing and complying with disorder-specific treatment.
• Obtain medical documentation to show your ability to function is impaired in work and/or social conditions regardless of the treatment that you receive.
• Contact a Social Security representative for assistance completing forms.
• Complete a disability application form.
• Complete an ADL Questionnaire.
• Authorize the Social Security Administration to access your medical records.

After obtaining this information, the Social Security Administration may suggest meeting with a psychiatrist for an additional examination. When a claim is approved, the Social Security Administration will send a letter with the amount of benefits to be paid monthly and the date the benefits begin. This date is six months after the determined start of disability.
